New York: Kamal Hassan-starrer Dasavatharam has conquered the hearts of people in the US. It was a huge hit from the word go.
New Jersey, Chicago and Dallas registered record turn out of fans. Crowds thronged theaters during the opening weekend to watch the much-hyped movie Dasavatharam.
Dasavatharam was the first South Indian movie to be released in US with more than 40 prints. The eagerly-awaited movie's Tamil version was released in 30 different cities. Bay Area, New Jersey will have three locations each, which is the first of its kind for a south Indian movie.
Online ticket sales are brisk with few thousand tickets sold in the first two days. While super hit movies like Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Santosh Subramaniam had a crowd of only around 200 to 400 in Chicago, Dasavatharam attracted 200 online tickets within hours of opening. The movie has been running full house in all the locations such as Dallas, Houston, Chicago and New Jersey so far.
Unique marketing techniques are being thought of to promote the movie, says US distributor Mr. Jayavel Murugan of Narmada Media, California. An event called Dosavatharam with 10 different types of Dosas was served to all 250 Kamal fans who participated in the event in Chicago.
Jai , Head Chef of Dakshin Schaumburg, an ardent Kamal fan received the first ticket and was very proud to receive the first paper ticket worldwide of a movie that is expected to make history in Indian cinema.
The ticket was issued on behalf of Narmadha Media. Mr. Murugan is all excited about the movie and the response he is getting from all over the US." I could hardly sleep with Kamal fans calling me and inquiring about the release date and venue. This is bound to be the super hit film."
According to Shariq Hamid, head of theater operations for FunAsiA, Dallas, it was a record turnout for a Kamal Hassan movie. According to Jimmy Philips, theater manager, FunAsiA Irving, Texas, the surprising factor was that the turnout was almost equal for both the Tamil and Telugu versions of the movie.
The movie also presented a great opportunity for businesses to reach out to the affluent South Asian community.
